Global crackdown on 'Ghost' cybercrime platform results in 51 arrests

Law enforcement agencies across multiple countries have dismantled the encrypted communication platform known as Ghost, which had become a crucial tool for criminal organisations involved in drug trafficking and money laundering.

The operation, coordinated by Europol, led to the arrest of 51 suspects across multiple countries and is expected to result in further arrests.

Ghost was infamous for its advanced security features, which allowed criminals to operate covertly and coordinate large-scale illegal activities.

Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, Europol's Deputy Executive Director, described the operation as "a global game of cat and mouse" and emphasized that the game is now over. The crackdown not only dismantled the platform but also disrupted various criminal activities.

Authorities have seized weapons, drugs, and over 1 million euros ($1.11 million) in cash. Additionally, the operation led to the dismantling of a drug lab in Australia and prevented several potential threats to public safety.

Europol's Executive Director, Catherine De Bolle, highlighted the importance of the operation, calling Ghost "a lifeline for serious organised crime."

She reassured the public that no matter how hidden criminal networks might believe they are, they cannot evade the collective efforts of international law enforcement agencies.

The operation involved a coordinated effort from authorities in Australia, Canada, France, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United States.

This global collaboration underscores a broader commitment to combating international organized crime.
