Rural areas to be now included in extensive cleanliness initiative for the first time.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the implementation of durable, environment-friendly measures under the Suthra Punjab Programme, aimed at enhancing cleanliness across the province.

In a recent statement, she highlighted that rural areas will be included in large-scale cleaning efforts for the first time.

The Chief Minister stressed the importance of adopting proper waste disposal practices and called for a shift away from plastic, which contributes significantly to pollution.

In March, Punjab’s Local Government Minister, Zeeshan Rafique, pledged to introduce innovative sanitation models as part of the Suthra Punjab Programme.

He emphasised the government's commitment to ensuring a clean environment for the province’s residents.

He stressed that each district administration must ensure the establishment of appropriate waste dumping sites.

In a notable shift, Zeeshan highlighted the inclusion of villages in the cleaning campaign, marking a comprehensive approach to sanitation efforts across the province.

This initiative aims to address the pressing challenges of waste management in both urban and rural areas.

With a population exceeding 127 million, Punjab generates approximately 57,500 tonnes of waste each day.

However, only 18,438 tonnes are disposed of properly, resulting in a daily backlog of nearly 49,000 tonnes.

Zeeshan pointed out the urgent need to address this escalating waste management issue, particularly in Lahore, where significant disposal efforts have occurred over the past month.
