In a recent interview, Super Bowl halftime producer Jesse Collins addressed the controversy surrounding Kendrick Lamar's selection as the upcoming halftime show headliner.

Fans have voiced their frustration, suggesting Lil Wayne was overlooked for the performance, especially with this season’s Super Bowl taking place in New Orleans, Wayne’s hometown.

“We love Wayne,” Collins told Variety when asked about the situation. "There’s always Vegas odds on who’s going to get to perform it. But I think we’re going to do an amazing show with Kendrick, and I think everybody’s going to love the halftime show. I know Kendrick is going to work exceptionally hard to deliver an amazing show."

Collins further clarified that Jay-Z, whose Roc Nation co-produces the halftime show, is the one who ultimately decides the headliner.

“It’s a decision that Jay makes,” Collins said. “Since we’ve been onboard with that show, he’s made it every year, and it’s been amazing. He’s always picked right!”

Lil Wayne, disappointed by not being selected, expressed his feelings in a video, stating that not being chosen “broke” him, adding that he mistakenly assumed he would be picked for the show. Jay-Z's role in the decision-making process has sparked discussions, especially given his past complicated relationships with Cash Money and Young Money.

Jay-Z and Roc Nation have been involved in organizing the halftime show since their 2019 partnership with the NFL, which also includes efforts toward social justice reform.
