LAHORE:

In order to enhance meat and milk production, the Punjab government will spend Rs2.5 billion on the livestock sector during the current fiscal year, sources said on Saturday.

They said that projects launched in this vital sector of the economy would create employment opportunities for hundreds of thousands of jobless people in rural areas.

They said that the Punjab government, for the first time in history, had exported meat to Malaysia in 2011. Earlier, they added, India dominated the meat market. They said that a modern meat processing plant was being set up in the province with the cooperation of Iran.

“It will enable the province to export a huge quantity of meat,” one source said.

The government has also established the Punjab Livestock and Dairy Development Board for the promotion of livestock. “The board, through model livestock farms, will impart training to farmers so they can take care of their cattle properly,” it said.

A livestock university will also be set up in Bahawalpur at a cost of Rs4.4 million, it added.
