Britney Spears shared her thoughts on Sabrina Carpenter’s 2024 MTV Video Music Awards performance, admitting she "didn’t understand" why Carpenter kissed an alien on stage. In an Instagram video posted on Thursday, the 42-year-old singer said, “I adore her. I love her to death. I didn’t understand that part… why didn’t she kiss a girl?” Spears made the playful comment in reference to her own famous kiss with Madonna at the 2003 VMAs.

Many fans interpreted Spears' comment as a playful jab at Carpenter, suggesting that she might be jealous of the younger singer's rising popularity. However, others argued that the comment was simply a humorous reference to Spears' own groundbreaking kiss with Madonna at the 2003 VMAs.

Spears, who admitted she didn’t watch the full show but caught clips of Carpenter’s medley performance on YouTube, also described the awards ceremony as "kind of weird" overall. Carpenter’s performance included her hits “Please Please Please,” “Taste,” and “Espresso,” and featured a backup dancer dressed as an alien, whom Carpenter kissed during the act.

Although Spears found the alien kiss puzzling, she was flattered that Carpenter mentioned her name on the red carpet, saying, "I thought that was kinda cool, because I forget I’m famous sometimes." Spears added, “She made me cool,” before humorously zipping her lips.

Carpenter’s performance appeared to invoke references to Spears’ own work, particularly the music video for “Oops!... I Did It Again,” which featured a romantic astronaut. Additionally, Megan Thee Stallion and Tate McRae paid homage to Spears’ iconic VMAs looks, further highlighting her lasting influence on the awards.
