NA Speaker Ayaz Sadiq proposes 'charter of parliament' between govt and opposition

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq also summons leaders of all political parties for an urgent meeting to discuss further steps.

National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has proposed a 'charter of parliament' to be signed between the government and opposition, aimed at fostering better cooperation despite ongoing leadership tensions.

During the assembly session, Sadiq addressed parliamentarians, suggesting that regardless of whether party leaders agree, members of parliament could still work towards signing a cross-party charter.

He stressed that the initiative would strengthen parliamentary conduct and collaboration.

The assembly session saw disruptions from PTI members, demanding the issuance of production orders for arrested lawmakers.

Pakistan People's Party leader Khursheed Shah intervened, calling for PTI members to be allowed to speak.

Referring to a past incident, Sadiq mentioned that production orders for arrested members were not issued during the PTI government but assured that he would act in the best interests of parliament, stating, "I will do what is right."

He also announced the formation of a committee to address the matter promptly.

Meanwhile Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf parliamentarian Asad Qaiser said that his party was 'not satisfied by the actions taken by the National Assembly Speaker."

Earlier, the NA Speaker had taken notice of the late-night raid on the Parliament House, and vowed to hold those responsible accountable.

Speaking during Tuesday's session of the National Assembly, Sadiq said that 'no one will remain silent about the incident and that decisive action will be taken.'

“We will take action on last night's incident and address it seriously," Sadiq said, adding that he had requested all video footage to identify the responsible parties.

He further stated that, if necessary, an FIR will be filed, and those involved will be named.

Recalling previous attacks on the Parliament and Parliament Lodges, Sadiq emphasised the need for a firm stance against such violations.

"I was the Speaker during the first attack on Parliament, and we must stand firm this time," he remarked.

Sadiq has also summoned political leaders from all parties for an urgent meeting in his chamber to discuss further steps.

Speaker Ayaz Sadiq after a review of the incident, in which several arrests were made inside the assembly, suspended five securoity personnel deputed at the National Assembly for negligence of duties.

The suspensions come after a session in which members from the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) condemned the entry of police into the assembly premises late at night to arrest members, calling it an attack on parliament.
