Kane hits double on 100th appearance as England defeat Finland in Nations League

England’s latest win puts them level with Greece; Kane, marking 100 caps, spoke of pride and motivation

England captain Harry Kane celebrated his 100th senior international cap in typical fashion, scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory against Finland in Nations League Group B2 at Wembley on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old Bayern Munich striker, wearing golden boots, broke Finland's stubborn defence with a right-footed shot in the 57th minute.

Kane was involved in a personal duel with Finland's goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky, who made several impressive saves, but the England forward struck again in the 76th minute, netting his record-extending 68th England goal. Kane also had a first-half header disallowed for offside and was substituted to a standing ovation in the 80th minute.

This win was England's second under interim manager Lee Carsley, following a victory over Ireland. The result puts them level at the top of the group with Greece, who also won on Tuesday. While speculation continues about whether Carsley will take over as full-time manager after Gareth Southgate's resignation, Kane’s achievements further solidify his status as England's greatest striker.

Kane became the third player to score on his 100th England appearance, a feat only previously achieved by Wayne Rooney and Bobby Charlton, though they each managed only one goal in their landmark games. After struggling during England's Euro 2024 run, Kane returned to form, taking advantage of Finland’s limited challenge.

Speaking after the match, Kane expressed pride in his milestone, stating, "It was a big night for me. Whenever you're doubted, it makes you hungrier to prove people wrong. I always back myself to score goals." Kane is the first England men’s player to reach 100 caps since Rooney in 2014.

Carsley gave first starts to midfielder Angel Gomes and Manchester City full-back Rico Lewis. England dominated the first half, though Kane's early header was ruled offside. Finland had a brief chance when Topi Keskinen failed to capitalise on a defensive error, but England largely controlled the game.

Kane's opening goal came from a clever pass by Trent Alexander-Arnold, which Kane converted with a powerful shot. His second came after a strong move involving Noni Madueke, who set up Kane for a quick finish. Carsley praised Kane’s commitment, noting, "He is highly motivated to play for England and score goals."

On his future as England manager, Carsley remained non-committal, saying, "I am totally relaxed about the situation."
