The controversy arose after McRae shared a promotional post on Instagram ahead of her song's release, scheduled for September 12.

The post, captioned "6 days til I’m ok," featured McRae posing with her fingers in a gesture around her eyes, which some fans interpreted as an Illuminati symbol. This quickly led to comments, with one user saying, "Not the Illuminati symbols pleaseeee," while another remarked, "Weird hand gestures."

Despite the backlash, many fans came to McRae's defense. One user commented, "Guys this is not the Illuminati sign lol y’all are always trying to make Tate look bad please stop," while another added, "Sometimes a hand gesture is just a hand gesture. If she gives someone the middle finger, is that an Illuminati symbol too?"

McRae herself appeared taken aback by the situation, responding under the post with, "Y’all what are these comments."
