Rawal Dam spillways reopened as water levels surge again in Islamabad

In response to heavy rainfall in Islamabad, the spillways of Rawal Dam have been reopened as water levels reached a dangerous height.

The district administration made the decision after water levels surged to 1752 feet following last night's downpour.

Before the spillways were opened, sirens were sounded to alert nearby communities. The administration also issued precautionary guidelines, advising residents to avoid rivers and streams and urging those in low-lying areas to follow safety measures.

The public was instructed to contact emergency services by dialing 16 in case of any urgent situation. Residents were also advised to relocate livestock to safer areas.

The district administration stated that emergency preparations have been completed to deal with potential flooding. Monitoring of streams, rivers, and bridges will continue as part of flood prevention efforts.

The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration announced on September 1 that the spillways of Rawal Dam will be opened on Sunday (today) at 4 pm as a precautionary measure due to rising water levels.

The water level in the dam has reached 1,752 feet, which prompted the authorities to take this step to prevent potential flooding.

Residents living near urban river channels have been advised to avoid these areas and take necessary precautions.

Those in low-lying regions are urged to secure their safety and protect their property.

In case of emergency, the public is encouraged to contact the district administration by dialing 16.

Livestock owners are also instructed to move their animals to higher ground immediately.

The district administration is closely monitoring the situation, particularly river channels and bridges, to ensure public safety.
