Although a number of villages and a road connecting Sehwan with the rural town of Jhangara have gone under water gushing out from the Manchar Lake, the government claims the flood threat is receding.
Deputy Commissioner of Jamshoro district, Riaz Hussain Wassan, informed on Monday that the irrigation department has started to release the lake's water in the Indus River which was until recently not taking the lake water because of its higher level.
According to him, the lake's capacity is at 123 Reduced Level (RL) while the water level currently stood at around 117 RL. Wassan said that the level in the river is still lower owing to which 18,000 cusecs water is being discharged from Manchar to Indus. "There is no imminent threat of flooding in Manchar," he asserted.
The lake's water is overwhelmingly poisonous because it is primarily being filled by Main Nara Valley Drain (MNVD).
However, due to the recent torrential downpour and the hill torrents which land in the lake, the quantum of toxicity subsides from the usual level.
The DC acknowledged that a 300 meters to 400 meters stretch of the road from Sehwan to Jhangara has become inundated, disconnecting the district's main town from a good number of villages.
