The Pakistan Business Forum (PBF) has opposed the nationwide strike planned for August 28, urging traders to pay their taxes, which are essential for the country's economy. PBF Spokesperson and Secretary General Punjab, Arif Ehsan Malik, emphasised the importance of increasing tax revenue but criticised the government's approach.
Malik condemned the government's practice of issuing advance tax notices to both registered and unregistered traders, demanding Rs30,000 to 60,000 per month. He described this as harassment, noting that most shopkeepers cannot afford such high taxes. "It was assured that only a nominal tax would be applied, but the FBR is demanding much more, which we strongly condemn," Malik stated.
PBF expressed concern over these advance tax notices and urged the government to review them. PBF is writing a letter to the FBR chairman requesting a revision of these assessments. Malik also pointed out that freelancers are struggling due to poor internet speeds in Pakistan.
