Protests erupt in Karachi over 10-day water shortage

Residents of Karachi's Korangi area staged a massive protest on Friday night, blocking both lanes of the road near Nasir Jump by burning tyres and setting up barriers, in response to a 10-day water supply disruption in the area.

The protesters, frustrated by the lack of water in Nasir Colony and surrounding areas, expressed their desperation, stating that they had been deprived of water for the past 10 days, forcing them to scramble for every drop.

The situation has been exacerbated by rising prices, making it difficult for residents to purchase water, and even when they attempt to buy water, they are met with refusal from water hydrant operators.

According to local reports, the protest, which began late Friday night, resulted in severe traffic disruptions, affecting commuters travelling between Korangi and Landhi.

The blockage caused significant traffic jams in the surrounding streets.

Protesters claimed they had lodged multiple complaints with the water board authorities but received no response, leading them to take to the streets.

They warned that if the water supply was not restored, they would continue their protests.

Police officials arrived at the scene and engaged in negotiations with the protesters, assuring them that they would liaise with water board officials to resolve the issue.

Following these assurances, the protesters peacefully dispersed, and traffic was restored.
