England’s upcoming Test tour of Pakistan this October may not be broadcasted in the UK, as no broadcasters have bid for the rights. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) issued a tender last month, but so far, there have been no bids, raising concerns of a potential TV blackout. The series is set to begin on October 7 in Multan.
Sky Sports, which covered England’s last Test series in Pakistan in December 2022, has reportedly informed the PCB that it does not intend to bid this year. TNT Sport has also declined to enter negotiations.
In a notable shift, the PCB has employed a local marketing agency to sell overseas broadcasting rights, rather than collaborating with global firms like IMG or Pitch International. These companies previously secured last-minute deals for tours.
Sky Sports has held rights to England’s overseas Tests for nearly 30 years but has recently cut back on such coverage. The network now prioritises exclusive rights to England’s home series and major events like next year’s World Cup in Pakistan. High costs and low subscriber interest during football season are cited as key reasons for this change.
Meanwhile, TNT Sport, owned by Warner Bros., has shown no interest despite picking up rights for other Test series in Australia, India, and New Zealand. Recent cuts and decisions not to renew deals, such as for European rugby, signal a more cautious approach.
Cricket fans in the UK may be disappointed if no broadcaster steps forward. This comes after low attendance at England’s recent Test match against Sri Lanka, highlighting challenges in maintaining Test cricket’s audience.
