The final season of The Umbrella Academy delivered an unexpected twist – a romance between Lila and Five that left many fans, and even the cast, scratching their heads. David Castañeda, who portrayed Diego, admitted to feeling "angry" and "pissed off" with the showrunner over this controversial storyline.
The plot thickened when Lila and Five, trapped together for seven years due to a timeline glitch, embarked on a romance. Upon returning home, Lila had the awkward task of confessing her affair to her husband, Diego, who also happened to be Five's brother.
Castañeda revealed in an interview with Us Weekly that he was initially baffled by this plot twist and even questioned the showrunner about its necessity. Showrunner Steve Blackman explained that he wanted Five to have a love story and felt Lila was the right fit. However, he acknowledged that the fans' reception was uncertain.
Judging by Castañeda's reaction and the general fan sentiment, it seems safe to say that this particular "big swing" may not have landed as smoothly as intended.
