Sabrina Carpenter and Barry Keoghan are taking a laid-back approach to their relationship. Despite speculation about a breakup, an exclusive source tells People that their romance is "on and off."

On August 16, Keoghan appeared to address the breakup rumors by liking a flirtatious Instagram post from Carpenter, where she posed in baby blue lingerie.

In a June interview with Rolling Stone, Carpenter hinted at the ambiguous nature of their relationship. When asked if she considered Keoghan her boyfriend, she responded cautiously, “How do I skirt around this question?”

She added, “When you meet people that feel authentic and are so brilliant and amazing in every way, that’s what you do. Obviously, I write songs about exactly how I feel, so I guess I can’t be so surprised that people are interested in who and what those songs are about. That’s something that comes with the territory.”

Carpenter and Keoghan first attracted attention with romance rumors after a dinner date in Los Angeles in December 2023. They had previously been spotted together during Paris Fashion Week. Their relationship was further confirmed in February when they appeared together at a Grammy Awards afterparty.

Although they posed separately on the red carpet, they were seen getting close at the event, with W Magazine later sharing a photo of them together. A few days later, they confirmed their relationship with a kiss outside Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles.

While keeping their relationship relatively private, Keoghan appeared as the love interest in Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” music video, released in June. Carpenter praised his performance, calling him “one of the best actors of this generation."
