Mahandri faces flood risk from landslides

Shifting terrain has created potential lake on the river and altered water flow

In the Mahandri Union Council of Balakot, landslides have caused significant threats to local residents as a mountain has shifted and fallen into the Kunhar River. This has raised concerns about the formation of a lake on the river and potential changes in the water flow.

The landslides have affected over 40 homes in the area, causing cracks in residential buildings and forcing residents to evacuate.

Additionally, the water lake formed near Mahandri Bazaar on the Kunhar River, which was created by flooding in the Manor Nullah 19 days ago, has not yet been cleared. This ongoing issue continues to endanger Mahandri Bazaar and nearby homes.

The landslides have also uprooted several trees, which have fallen into the Kunhar River, spreading dust clouds and causing widespread fear among residents.

If timely action is not taken, the residential area and the savings of its inhabitants could be swept away. The recent flooding in Manor Nullah had already destroyed the Mahandri Bridge and affected numerous shops and hotels.

The lake formed by the river's water poses a threat to Mahandri Bazaar and the surrounding area, and the slow response from relevant authorities has prevented the lake's dam from being breached.

Continued landslides raise the risk of further damage, including the formation of additional lakes and potential changes in the river's course.
