ISLAMABAD:

The Supreme Court's Registrar Office has returned some petitions related to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJ) Qazi Faez Isa with objections. Five PTI members, including Shaukat Basra, had personally objected to the chief justice's inclusion in the Punjab Election Tribunals case bench.

The registrar's objection stated that such petitions cannot be filed in a personal capacity.

Meanwhile, PTI's Salman Akram Raja has filed a request for adjournment in the case, arguing that Advocate Hamid Khan is abroad until September 6 and the case should be postponed until his return.

The Supreme Court's five-member larger bench, headed by CJ Qazi Faez Isa, will hear the Election Tribunals case on August 19 (Monday).

The relationship between CJ Isa and the PTI has been tense since the filing of a presidential reference regarding his removal in May 2019, when the party was in power.

At that time, there was a cordial relationship between the PTI and the security establishment, and both had made a joint effort to remove Justice Isa.

When the relationship between the powers that be and the PTI turned sour after the ouster of the party's government in April 2021, PTI leaders started saying that filing the presidential reference against Justice Isa was a mistake.

The PTI does not have a consistent policy on CJ Isa, who is hearing various cases related to the party and its leaders.

Last month, one of the PTI's counsels, Niazullah Niazi, raised objections to CJ Isa, who was leading a bench hearing the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) petition against the Lahore High Court judgment regarding the appointment of election tribunals.

However, another PTI counsel, Salman Akram Raja, who is a respondent in the same case, did not endorse Niazi's viewpoint.
