Tyler, The Creator criticizes 'meme' rappers and calls out Ian for mocking black artists

"There’s so many n****s out right now that aren’t musicians that are getting treated like musicians," Tyler expressed.

In a new interview with Maverick Carter for his series Mavericks, Tyler, The Creator openly discussed the current state of hip-hop, expressing his disdain for "meme" rappers and those who, in his view, do not treat the art form with respect. 

"I don’t wanna seem like a hater. Sometimes I have hater energy ’cause I just think I’m that good," Tyler admitted. 

"I love this art form so much bro and there’s so many n****s out right now that aren’t musicians that are getting treated like musicians ’cause they make meme records."

Tyler's critique extended to St. Louis-based rapper Ian, whom he accused of mocking prominent Black artists like Future and Gucci Mane. 

Without naming Ian directly, Tyler described him as a "white kid, regular Caucasian man" who is "mocking rap music." 

He contrasted Ian's approach with artists like Mac Miller and Eminem, whom he believes had a genuine love for the genre.

Tyler's criticism of the hip-hop landscape isn't new; fans and critics have long lamented the lack of creativity in mainstream rap. 

Despite this, Ian has gained early support from established artists like Lil Yachty, helping to boost his career. 

In the interview, Tyler also touched on other frustrations with hip-hop, including the rush to label albums as "mid" after just one listen. 

Additionally, he reflected on a past disagreement with Eminem, admitting that he owes the rap legend an apology.
