Gena Rowlands, star of "The Notebook" and Nick Cassavetes' Muse, dies at 94

Her passing was confirmed by her son who earlier revealed that his mother had been battling Alzheimer's disease.

Gena Rowlands, renowned for her groundbreaking work in independent cinema and her captivating performance in the beloved film "The Notebook," has died at the age of 94.

Her passing was confirmed by her son, filmmaker Nick Cassavetes, who earlier revealed that his mother had been battling Alzheimer's disease.   

Rowlands was a beacon in the world of independent film, starring in numerous films directed by her husband, John Cassavetes. Together, they created raw and authentic portrayals of working-class individuals and their struggles, leaving a lasting impact on cinema. Some of their notable collaborations include "A Woman Under the Influence," "Gloria," and "Faces."   

Rowlands' exceptional talent earned her two Academy Award nominations, one for her heart-wrenching portrayal of a troubled housewife in "A Woman Under the Influence" and another for her role as a strong-willed woman protecting a young boy in "Gloria." She also garnered numerous other accolades, including three Primetime Emmy Awards, one Daytime Emmy, and two Golden Globes.

In 2015, Rowlands received an honorary Academy Award for her significant contributions to the film industry. During her acceptance speech, she eloquently expressed the joy of acting, stating, "You don't just live one life. You live many lives."  

A new generation of fans came to appreciate Rowlands' talent through her poignant performance in her son's film "The Notebook," where she played the older version of Allie, a woman grappling with memory loss while reminiscing about a lifelong love story.

Rowlands' career spanned decades and included various roles in film and television. She last graced the screen in 2014's "Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks."   

Her legacy as a fearless and gifted actress will undoubtedly continue to inspire generations to come. She will be remembered not only for her remarkable performances but also for her unwavering dedication to her craft and her significant influence on independent cinema.
