China is currently grappling with an extreme heatwave that has not only disrupted daily life but also led to an unexpected phenomenon involving vehicles.

A peculiar video has gone viral on social media, particularly on X (formerly known as Twitter), showing cars that appear to be "pregnant." This unusual sight has raised curiosity and concern, prompting many to question the cause of this strange occurrence.

The video, which has captured widespread attention, depicts several cars with swollen exteriors, giving them a "pregnant" appearance. This isn't due to mechanical failures or manufacturing defects but is directly related to the soaring temperatures in China. The intense heat has caused the protective films or wraps applied to these vehicles to expand, resulting in a swollen look.

Car wraps are thin vinyl films used on vehicles for paint protection, aesthetic enhancement, or advertising purposes. Although designed to withstand various weather conditions, extreme heat can push these wraps beyond their limits. Experts from Wrap Guys explain that prolonged exposure to high temperatures and direct sunlight can weaken the adhesive backing, leading to bubbling, stretching, and swelling seen in the viral video.

While car wraps usually come with a UV-protective layer to prevent such issues, the record-breaking temperatures in China have proven too intense for some of these films. The swelling occurs when the adhesive off-gases and trapped air expands, forming unsightly bubbles that give the cars an inflated appearance.

The video, shared on August 6, quickly went viral, garnering over 700,000 views and eliciting a range of reactions. Social media users responded with a mix of humor, concern, and speculation. Some questioned the quality of the adhesive used, while others warned against popping the bubbles due to the potential release of toxic gases. Another user suggested that poor-quality paint protection films are more likely to expand under excessive heat, explaining the phenomenon seen in the video.

Experts stress the importance of quality and maintenance when it comes to car wraps. Although most wraps are designed to withstand environmental conditions, extreme heat can still present challenges. High-quality wraps with strong adhesives and proper installation are less prone to severe issues, but regular maintenance is crucial for longevity. Car owners are advised to park in shaded areas, use sunshades, and conduct routine inspections to prevent heat-related damage.
