Akili McDowell has been arrested and charged with the murder of a 20-year-old man.
The 21-year-old actor, known for his roles in "Billions" and "David Makes Man," was detained last week in connection with a fatal shooting, according to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.
Gonzalez posted on Facebook that “Harris County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an incident that occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex” on July 20.
Upon arrival, they found Cesar Peralta, 20, with multiple gunshot wounds. Peralta was declared dead at the scene.
The statement mentioned that the suspects fled. It is unclear how McDowell is linked to the incident or his connection to Peralta.
The young actor was booked into the Harris County Jail in Houston, Texas.
McDowell also faces theft charges, with his bond set at $400,210 for both crimes, according to online jail records.
He will appear in court for the theft charges later this week, but the murder charges won't be addressed in court until October.
His manager, Jonell Whitt, described the murder as "an unfortunate situation" in a statement to Law & Crime.
“I am in prayer for Akili and those impacted by this tragedy,” Whitt said.
McDowell gained fame at 15 when he secured the lead role in "David Makes Man," a coming-of-age story about a 14-year-old boy who “lives in the projects but attends a magnet school for academically gifted youngsters.”
Following the series premiere on OWN, McDowell shared with Vulture that he "related" to his character, having grown up in a single-parent household.
