Sindh govt to relocate bus terminals out of Karachi, introduce free shuttle service
The Sindh government has announced the relocation of bus terminals from Karachi city to its outskirts, along with the introduction of a free shuttle service for travellers.
The decision, which promises to enhance the urban transport experience, was confirmed by
Provincial Minister of Sindh for Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon during a meeting on Tuesday.
Memon outlined that the complimentary shuttle service would commence on August 14.
This initiative is designed to ensure that travellers can reach the terminals without any additional cost or hassle.
"We are committed to providing this facility from the existing bus depots to the new terminals free of charge," Memon emphasised.
Today's meeting, presided over by Memon, was attended by Secretary Transport Asad Zamin, Commissioner Karachi Hasan Naqvi, Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho, and Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Traffic Ahmed Nawaz Cheema, among other key stakeholders.
The discussions focused on the strategic relocation of bus terminals, aiming to reduce the pressure of heavy vehicles on Karachi’s roads.
Memon also highlighted the negative impact of heavy vehicles on Karachi’s infrastructure, stating, "Heavy vehicles have been a source of distress for Karachi’s residents, increasing the burden on our roads".
"This relocation will alleviate some of these pressures," he added.
The relocation plan also encompasses the modernisation of the Karachi Bus Terminal, which will be "equipped with state-of-the-art facilities" to cater to passengers' needs.
The free shuttle service will operate from major points in the city, including Cantt Station, Sagheer Shaheed Road, MA Jinnah Road, and Al-Karam Square.
"Our goal is to ensure that neither the citizens nor the passengers face any inconvenience or discomfort during this process," he stated.
He also stressed that the interests of all stakeholders, including transporters, would be considered to ensure a smooth implementation.
A police checkpost will also be established at the Karachi Bus Terminal.
Memon assured that the relocation would be conducted on a priority basis.
"Efforts will be made to ensure that neither the transporters suffer losses nor the passengers are deprived of relief," he concluded.
