David Ayer is once again urging Warner Bros. to release his version of Suicide Squad.

Since the release of Suicide Squad in 2016, Ayer has openly expressed how the final cut of the DC film differed from his original vision due to complications during post-production.

An online campaign called #ReleaseTheAyerCut has emerged, requesting Warner Bros. to officially release Ayer’s version of the movie.

The campaign gained more momentum following the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League by Warner Bros. in 2021, but the studio has not yet announced any intention to address the request.

On the film’s eighth anniversary, Ayer is once again calling for the release of his version of the movie.

On X, Ayer shared a photo featuring a close-up of the Joker’s mouth.

The image displays the text, “Release the Ayer cut!” and includes a quote from Ayer at the bottom that reads, “This is not a directors cut, this is my edit, this is my mature cut.”

The photo also features the hashtag #RestoreTheSnyderVerse and logos from Justice League movies that Snyder was unable to complete.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ayer and James Gunn had previously discussed the possibility of releasing Ayer’s Suicide Squad cut once the “new DCU has some momentum,” However, Ayer notably declared in January 2024 that he was abandoning the campaign.

“I can take the hint. It’s been radio silent, and I’m done pushing a rock uphill,” Ayer said.

“There are great places and great partners out there to work with, and I just want to focus on being a great partner and making some good movies.”

Ayer’s Suicide Squad is part of the DCEU, which officially concluded in 2023 with the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Gunn and Peter Safran are now developing a new DCU, which is set to officially begin this December with an animated series titled Creature Commandos.

Certain story elements and characters from the DCEU will be carried over into the DCU, but no official announcements have been made regarding any Suicide Squad-related projects, aside from Peacemaker Season 2.
