The statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Bangladesh’s independence leader and former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s father, was vandalised by protestors in Dhaka.

A large crowd can be seen gathered around the monument, shouting chants as fragments of it fall to the ground.

This incident took place amid anti-government protests in the country, which have intensified during recent weeks.

Hasina, in office since 2009 and re-elected in January 2024, faces increasing criticism.

Hasina Wajid later resigned from the premiership later during the day after the Prime Minister's House was stormed by protestors in Dhaka.

Hasina Wajid fled to India on a military helicopter, accoring to media reports. The country army chief later addressed the nation and vowed to establish peace in the country. He announced that an interim government would be intalled and that talks in this regard were under way.
