Netflix fans received mixed news today, with initial excitement followed by disappointment for some viewers.

The US streaming giant announced that the second series of Squid Game, the follow-up to the highly successful drama that enthralled audiences in 2021, will be released later this year.

However, it was also revealed that a "final season" would air next year, indicating that the broadcaster will conclude its most popular show after its 2025 season.

One fan objected, "‘Final season what y’all mean. This show is too damn good for it to end on season 3."

Another agreed, "Anyone else find it weird that this is their most watched show ever and they’re only making three seasons out of it?"

Squid Game, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, follows a group of financially desperate contestants trapped in a deadly game where they must compete against each other for a large cash prize.

It holds the title of the most-watched TV series in Netflix history, surpassing Stranger Things and Wednesday, and reached the No. 1 spot in 94 countries, including the UK, upon its release.

A minute-long trailer for the second series was released today, initially depicting athletes on an Olympic-style running track, who are then replaced by competitors in the show's iconic green tracksuits, shown falling as they are eliminated.

The official description for the new series states: "Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport."
