In a remarkable recognition of courage and storytelling, Palestinian journalist and filmmaker Bisan Owda has secured a nomination for the prestigious News & Documentary Emmy Awards. It’s Bisan from Gaza and I’m Still Alive, in collaboration with AJ+, has garnered acclaim for its raw and truthful depiction of life amid the ongoing challenges in Gaza.

This prestigious nomination was shared with the world by AJ+ on their Instagram handle. Since October 7, Owda has dedicated herself to documenting her daily reality in Gaza, offering a rare and unvarnished view of the Palestinian resistance under Israeli occupation. Her work has resonated deeply with audiences worldwide, revealing the resilience and fortitude of a people navigating profound adversity.

In June, Owda’s relentless dedication was honoured with a Peabody Award, which she received from a refugee camp in Gaza—an achievement that marked her as one of the youngest recipients in the history of the award. The Peabody Jury commended her for “showing bravery and persistence in the midst of imminent danger and for carrying a heavy journalistic burden as the entire world looks on.”

Owda dedicated her Peabody Award to the university students and global activists who have shown solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. “To all the people who took to the streets. To all the people at home who are participating in boycotts. To all the people worldwide, regardless of their religion, colour, and ethnicity,” she said in a heartfelt statement.

“Regardless of what makes them different, they’re united in one mission: in their demands for a free Palestine. You deserve this award. And so do we. And one day, this genocide will end. And Palestine will be free. And we will welcome you here. On Gazan soil. All of you.”

Tony Karon, the editorial lead at AJ+, reflected on Owda’s impact, stating, “Bisan’s heroic storytelling exemplifies the spirit of AJ+ and the wider Al Jazeera network. We strive to tell the human story from where the missiles land, to elevate the human spirit and the hope that it brings for better days, to shine a light on places and stories those in power would rather keep shrouded in darkness. Bisan has provided a magnificent example of how to cover a war. We are honoured and humbled to have her work grace our platform.”

AJ+ won a Peabody Award last year for One Day In Hebron, a report by Senior Presenter Dena Takruri on the discrimination faced by Palestinians in her father’s hometown in the occupied West Bank.
