Marvel Studios dropped a bombshell at San Diego Comic-Con, revealing that Robert Downey Jr. will return to the MCU as the iconic villain Doctor Doom, replacing Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror in the newly titled Avengers: Doomsday. This unexpected twist comes after Majors was fired from his role due to a harassment and assault conviction.

Jonathan Majors, originally cast as Kang the Conqueror, was removed from the MCU following assault charges. This forced Marvel Studios to rework their plans, including renaming "Avengers: The Kang Dynasty" to "Avengers: Doomsday." At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, it was announced that the Russo Brothers will direct both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Additionally, Robert Downey Jr. will return to the MCU, not as Iron Man, but as the new villain, Doctor Doom.

Avengers: Doomsday, slated for a May 2026 release, will be directed by the Russo Brothers and also feature the Fantastic Four, setting the stage for a major showdown. The decision to replace Kang with Doctor Doom marks a significant shift in the Multiverse Saga's trajectory.

Downey Jr., beloved for his portrayal of Iron Man, is no stranger to Marvel villains, having previously met with 20th Century Fox for the role of Doctor Doom in 2005's Fantastic Four. This casting not only brings a full-circle moment for Downey but also adds another layer of complexity to the MCU with the actor playing two iconic characters.

The announcement has sparked countless questions about how Doctor Doom will fit into the Multiverse Saga and how Downey's portrayal will impact the story. Regardless, this unexpected twist has reignited fan excitement and anticipation for the upcoming Avengers films.

The upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps, set in a futuristic 1960s, may provide further clues about Doctor Doom's origins and motivations. With the Fantastic Four confirmed for both Avengers: Doomsday and its sequel, Secret Wars, the stage is set for an epic showdown between Marvel's greatest heroes and their new, formidable foe.
