Robert Downey Jr. is set to make a significant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

At San Diego Comic-Con on July 27, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that Downey, 59, will play the villain Victor von Doom, also known as Doctor Doom, in the next two Avengers films: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. This marks a departure from his iconic role as Iron Man.

Feige also revealed that Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, will return to helm Avengers: Doomsday. The announcement came as part of a broader preview of the MCU's future, which will include an adaptation of the popular comic-book storyline, Secret Wars.

Despite the shift in roles, Downey’s new portrayal of Doctor Doom promises to be a central element in this evolving narrative.

Downey addressed his new role during the panel, stating, “New mask, same task. What did I tell ya? I like playing complicated characters.” This statement reflects his enthusiasm for portraying complex characters and his commitment to the MCU's evolving storylines.

The Russo brothers noted that a key character was essential for Secret Wars, describing the need for "the greatest actor in the world" for the role of Doctor Doom. Previously, Marvel had planned Phase Five and Six, including The Kang Dynasty, but those plans changed following Jonathan Majors' legal issues.

Consequently, the Avengers film has been renamed, and Downey's new role signifies a major shift in the MCU's direction.

At Comic-Con, other MCU stars like Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth made appearances to promote upcoming projects.

The next MCU film, Captain America: Brave New World, is scheduled for release on February 14, 2025.
