Japan will continue to collaborate with the United States to maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait, irrespective of the outcome of the upcoming US presidential election, Japan's top government spokesperson told Reuters in an exclusive interview.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi emphasised the importance of peace and stability in the region, stating, "Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is hugely important not just for our own security but for the entire international community." "Given the US and Japan both believe in the importance of resolving cross-strait issues peacefully, we will continue these diplomatic efforts. It is important to reinforce the common ground we have as allies," he added.
This statement came in response to concerns about a potential shift in US policy if Republican candidate Donald Trump wins the presidency. Trump recently suggested that Taiwan should compensate the US for its defence, raising questions about American support for the island nation under his possible administration. However, Hayashi assured that Japan's stance remains firm.
China considers Taiwan a part of its territory and has not ruled out using force to assert control over the democratically governed island. While the US does not have a formal defence agreement with Taiwan, it is legally obligated to provide the island with the means to defend itself.
Trump's remarks that "Taiwan doesn't give us anything" have sparked concerns about future US commitments.
Additionally, Trump's running mate, J.D. Vance, recently labelled China as the "biggest threat" to the United States, hinting at a potentially tougher stance on the Indo-Pacific region under a Republican administration. Earlier this year, Trump also suggested the possibility of a new trade war with China, threatening to impose a 60 percent tariff on Chinese imports.
Hayashi refrained from commenting on the tariff threat but stressed the importance of ongoing dialogue with China. "I understand that there are preparations being made for a Japan-China foreign minister meeting. It's important to communicate clearly with one another on various levels," he said.
This commitment to dialogue and cooperation underscores Japan's dedication to maintaining regional stability amidst global political uncertainties.
