In a touching moment on CNN, Van Jones, political commentator and former Obama adviser, struggled to contain his emotions as he discussed President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
Biden, aged 81, has opted to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.
Jones likened Biden's withdrawal to a heartfelt moment with a grandparent. "It's kind of like when your grandpa... you gotta take the keys," Jones remarked, visibly moved by the announcement.
"And he’s fighting and he’s fighting you and everybody’s so frustrated. And then you finally get the keys back. And then you just cry," Jones added tearfully.
Describing Biden as someone he deeply cares about, Jones emphasized the selflessness of Biden's decision. "If you're a young person watching this, this is leadership, this is patriotism," Jones asserted passionately.
Jones further expressed his personal attachment to Biden, stating, "I love this man, I care about this man," reflecting the sentiment of loss and respect in the wake of Biden's withdrawal.
Following Biden's decision, the Biden-Harris campaign has been rebranded as "Harris for President," according to filings with the Federal Election Commission. Biden, in a statement, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve as President and emphasized his intention to focus on his duties for the remainder of his term.
In response, Vice President Kamala Harris lauded Biden's decision as "selfless and patriotic," acknowledging his decades of service to the nation.
As the Democratic Party adjusts to this significant shift in its presidential strategy, all eyes now turn to Harris and the future of her campaign.
