ISLAMABAD:

Three women leaders of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) have challenged the Supreme Court verdict which declared the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) eligible to receive reserved seats for women and non-Muslims in the national and provincial assemblies.

The apex court’s decision further allowed 41 members who contested the general election as independent candidates to approach the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) within 15 days and demonstrate their party affiliation before officially joining the PTI.

In their petition, Huma Akhtar Chughtai, Mah Jabeen Abbasi, and Syeda Amna Batool urged the court to declare its July 12 as null and void.

Those who have been made respondents in the plea among others include the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) and the ECP. The plea contended that it was an “established fact” that the SIC had not submitted a list for the reserved seats.

It said the entire case was about the SIC reserved seats but the apex court ruled in favour of the party, which was not “even present before court”.
