NEW DELHI:

A woman lost her life, and three others sustained injuries on Saturday when a portion of a building collapsed in Mumbai, India. Officials report that several people are feared to be trapped under the debris.

The collapse occurred near the Grant Road railway station, affecting the front portion of a four-story building. Emergency responders, including police, fire brigade teams, civic body officials, and ambulances, quickly arrived on the scene to carry out rescue operations. Some parts of the building remain precariously hanging.

Television news channels broadcast video footage showing locals lifting concrete slabs to rescue a man whose leg was trapped in the rubble.

Mumbai experienced heavy rainfall on Friday, causing waterlogging on some roads and railway tracks. According to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation officials, the building had been declared dangerous, and residents were issued a notice to evacuate.

Accidents resulting from failing infrastructure, both new and old, are common in India. Construction experts attribute these incidents to lax administration and corruption, which lead to the use of poor-quality materials, inadequate supervision, and poor safety standards for workers.
