In a procedural move required by California law, Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, the 18-year-old daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, has initiated the legal process to change her name to Shiloh Jolie.

This announcement was recently published in The Los Angeles Times as part of the formalities mandated before the name-change petition can proceed further.

According to family law attorney David Glass, based in California, such filings necessitate publication in a newspaper for four consecutive weeks. This step ensures that the petition is made public before a judge can consider approving the request.

"In reality, it could not have been avoided," Glass explained. "She has to file a formal petition with the court to change her name. And she has to run an ad 4 weeks in a row before the hearing is scheduled, in addition to giving both of her parents written notification."

Typically, name change petitions proceed smoothly unless there are specific legal objections or complications. Glass noted, "These name change petitions usually run very smoothly and are granted, unless the person has a criminal history and is trying to get away from punishment or liabilities."

Shiloh filed her petition on her 18th birthday, May 27, seeking to drop "Pitt" from her last name and adopt "Jolie" instead. This legal step underscores her autonomy as an adult, as she no longer requires parental consent for such decisions.

The legal proceedings come amidst ongoing dynamics within the Jolie-Pitt family. Sources close to the family have indicated that Brad Pitt, 60, has limited contact with his adult children following his split from Angelina Jolie in 2016. Recent reports suggest he maintains visitation rights with his younger children amid his filming commitments in Europe.

Despite the procedural nature of Shiloh's name change, sources have shared that Pitt is "aware and upset" about the decision. An insider revealed, "He’s aware and upset that Shiloh dropped his last name. The reminders that he’s lost his children, is of course not easy for Brad. He loves his children and misses them."

The legal process remains ongoing, with Shiloh Jolie-Pitt's name change request set to proceed through the court system in accordance with California law.
