KARACHI:

The Hindu community staged a protest at Clifton Teen Talwar for the recovery of Priya Kumari, who was missing since August 2021.

Priya was seven-year-old when she mysteriously disappeared from Sangrar town of Sukkur. The Hindu community and members of civil society blocked the Teen Talwar roundabout. They carried placards and banners and raised slogans for the recovery of Priya.

Meanwhile, a heavy contingent of South Zone Police also reached the spot. In an attempt to clear the major traffic intersection, the police dispersed the protesters and detained many of them. During the episode, a TV reporter and a cameraman were injured.

Upon receiving information about the incident, Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Lanjar ordered an inquiry and directed South Zone DIG to take departmental action against the personnel involved in the torture. He said that any abuse against journalist community will not be tolerated.

Meanwhile, the South Zone police condemned police highhandedness against journalists during the protest at Clifton. According to the spokesperson, initial investigations revealed the involvement of four policemen, who were suspended, and an inquiry was ordered by the SSP South.

The suspended officials include two constables Irfan Ali and Ehsan Khan from the Clifton police station, and two constables Irfan Niazi and Asad Khan from the Frere police station.
