IGP, JIT chief summoned in Arshad Sharif murder case

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has summoned the Islamabad Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the head of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT) in the journalist Arshad Sharif's murder case.

Chief Justice Aamer Farooq heard the petition, seeking the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the murder of Sharif and summoned the IGP and JIT chief in person. The court also summoned the Attorney General on July 25 for assistance in the case.

At the onset of the hearing, the police informed the court that red warrants had been issued for two suspects, Waqar and Khurram, who are residing in Kenya.

Additional Attorney General Munawar Dogal told the court that the JIT has completed its investigation within Pakistan’s jurisdiction and is in the process of negotiating with Kenya on the extradition of the suspects. The JIT has held 44 meetings so far.

CJ Farooq remarked that he was not concerned with the number of meetings but with the progress in the case. Additional AG replied that the incident occurred in Kenya, and “until we receive assistance from them, we cannot make any progress.”

The chief justice responded, “Then say it clearly that nothing has been done yet.”
