Prince Harry mentions Pat Tillman's mother in acceptance speech amid ESPYs controversy

The Duke of Sussex prompted criticism after receiving the Pat Tillman award without being a veteran.

Prince Harry delivered a heartfelt speech at the 2024 ESPY Awards as he accepted the Pat Tillman Award for Service on Thursday night. 

The Duke of Sussex expressed gratitude to the Pat Tillman Foundation, led by Marie Tillman Shenton, and paid tribute to Mary Tillman, Pat Tillman's mother, whose advocacy for her son's legacy he deeply respects. 

Reflecting on the enduring bond between a mother and son, Harry also invoked memories of his late mother, Princess Diana.

Harry, known for his decade-long service in the British Army and two tours in Afghanistan, was honored for founding the Invictus Games in 2014. 

This adaptive sports competition has significantly impacted wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans globally over the past decade. 

His wife, Meghan Markle, joined him at the event, emphasizing their support for the Invictus Games athletes.

During his speech, Harry redirected attention from his personal recognition to highlighting the achievements of Invictus Games participants and their families, stressing the Games' role in healing and unity within the veteran community. 

He underscored the Games' milestone anniversary and its critical mission amid global division and conflict.

The decision to award Harry sparked controversy, with Mary Tillman criticizing ESPN's choice, citing other deserving candidates within the veteran community. ESPN defended the decision, citing the Invictus Games Foundation's impactful work and promoting healing through sports for military personnel worldwide.

Prince Harry's advocacy for veterans has received widespread acclaim, with participants like Retired Chief Master Sgt. Garrett Kuwada highlighting the Games' profound impact on their lives and healing processes.
