In a troubling incident of domestic abuse, private TV channel anchor Ayesha Jehanzeb has reportedly become the latest victim of grievous physical assault by her husband. The alleged assault left her severely bruised, media sources reported on Wednesday.
According to the anchor, a domestic spat with her husband escalated, leading to the horrifying physical abuse. After undergoing a medical examination, Ayesha filed a case against Haris under charges of attempted murder.
The police confirmed that Haris has been arrested and is currently under investigation.
The upsetting report prompted a swift reaction from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, who took notice of the assault on the popular TV host and ordered the police to take action against the accused.
The chief minister has also sought a detailed report from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and directed that Ayesha be provided with the best possible medical care and security.
"Women are my red line; violence against domestic or working women will not be tolerated," she asserted. Violence against women is a global phenomenon, and Pakistan is no exception.
A report by the Asia and the Pacific Policy Society highlights that around 27% of women in Pakistan face violence at some point in their lives.
The Sindh High Court recently observed that despite the Domestic Violence (Prevention and Protection) Act 2013, the government had failed to implement the law effectively.
