Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are set to reprise their roles as mother and daughter in the long-awaited sequel to Freaky Friday, which has been confirmed to be in development.
“As I went around the world with Halloween Ends, people wanted to know if there was going to be another Freaky Friday. Something really touched a chord,” Curtis shared with The New York Times in May 2023.
“When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, ‘It feels like there’s a movie to be made.’”
Lohan expressed her agreement, mentioning that she and Curtis were deferring to Disney's decision-makers. “We would only make something that people would absolutely adore,” she added.
The original Freaky Friday debuted in 2003, featuring Lohan as the teenage Anna and Curtis portraying her mother, Tess. Their frequent arguments lead them to accidentally switch bodies after consuming enchanted fortune cookies.
The cast also includes Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray.
Has Disney announced Freaky Friday 2?
The New York Times reported in May 2023, during the movie's 20th anniversary celebration, that Disney had confirmed a sequel was being developed. Elyse Hollander was assigned to write the screenplay, and discussions were underway for Curtis and Lohan to reprise their roles.
Before it was officially confirmed, Curtis spearheaded the push for another movie.
“Let me be the grandma, let me be the old grandma who switches places, so then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma who’s still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon,” she mentioned during her appearance on The View in October 2022.
“I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today. I want to be a helicopter parent in today’s world.”

Lohan and Curtis will return as Anna and Tess, respectively.
In June 2024, it was revealed that Murray, Harmon, Vidal, Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao will also reprise their roles, alongside newcomers Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.
Who is the director of ‘Freaky Friday 2’?
According to Variety's March 2024 report, Nisha Ganatra will step in as director, succeeding original director Mark Waters.
Ganatra, known for directing heartfelt comedies like The High Note and Late Night, will helm the project. The screenplay has been penned by Jordan Weiss, known for Dollface.
What is ‘Freaky Friday 2’ about?
According to details shared in a casting call by Ganatra, the plot reveals that Lohan's character, Anna, now has a teenage daughter named Harper, who is described as a witty tomboy.
The description states: "Harper is in a bit of a mood these days because her longtime single mom is set to marry British restauranteur Eric Davies. If that wasn't bad enough Eric comes with his own 14-year-old daughter, sharp-tongued Lily. Harper and Lily do not see eye to eye. Harper would like to see things go her way and use her intelligence to stop this marriage from ever happening."
