Sony Music is reportedly finalizing a historic deal to acquire Queen's legendary music catalogue for $1.27 billion.

This acquisition would be the most expensive music catalog deal to date, surpassing Sony's previous $600 million investment in Michael Jackson's catalog.

The deal, reported by HITS Daily Double, is complex due to the individual contributions of each founding member to Queen's extensive catalog of hits. Sony Music Publishing will oversee the financial, copyright, and contractual aspects of the agreement.

The acquisition includes a wide range of assets, including recording and publishing rights, royalties from previous deals with Disney Music Group and Universal Music Group, and name and likeness rights. This could open doors for various ventures, including musicals, merchandise, and film placements.

However, the deal excludes revenue from live performances, which will remain with the surviving band members, Brian May and Roger Taylor, who continue to tour with singer Adam Lambert.

Queen, formed in 1970, boasts a rich catalog of iconic hits, including "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Another One Bites the Dust," "Somebody to Love," "We Will Rock You," and "We Are the Champions." These timeless classics have cemented Queen's status as one of the most influential rock bands of all time.

While other parties were reportedly interested in acquiring the catalogue, Sony emerged as the winning bidder, solidifying its position as a major player in the music industry.
