Actor Steve Sweeney, known for 'Lock, Stock’ and ‘Nil By Mouth’ passes away at 74

Co-stars and fans mourn the loss of the versatile actor known for his impactful roles in British cinema.

Actor Steve Sweeney, renowned for his performances in iconic films such as 'Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels' and 'Nil By Mouth,' has died at the age of 74. The cause of his death has not yet been disclosed.

Kathy Burke, his co-star in 'Nil By Mouth,' expressed her condolences via social media, stating, "Heard the sad news last night that UK actor and old friend, Steve Sweeney has passed away." 

She fondly remembered his contributions to theatre and cinema, highlighting his roles in 'Lock Stock & Nil By Mouth' and praising his collaborations with director Alan Clarke. Burke remarked, "Once met, never forgotten. RIP mate."

In 'Nil By Mouth,' directed by Gary Oldman, Sweeney portrayed the character Danny alongside a stellar cast that included Ray Winstone and Jamie Foreman. 

His role as Plank in Guy Ritchie's 'Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels' solidified his reputation, contributing to the film's significant success at the box office and enhancing Ritchie's global acclaim as a director.

Beyond his film career, Sweeney appeared in various television series such as 'The Bill,' 'EastEnders,' and 'Dalziel & Pascoe.' 

Most recently, Sweeney starred alongside Zac Efron and Russell Crowe in the 2022 comedy 'The Greatest Beer Run Ever,' portraying a pivotal role in the Vietnam War-themed narrative.
