Ariana Grande has addressed the viral clip from her recent 'Podcrushed' podcast appearance where her speaking voice changed dramatically. The pop star explained that the shifts in her voice are intentional and related to vocal health.
The second half of Grande's 'Podcrushed' episode, hosted by Penn Badgley, premiered on June 17. Around the 22:16 mark, viewers noticed a significant change in her voice pitch, which quickly gained attention online. One user on X (formerly Twitter) commented, "this voice change is sending me đđ regular Ariana was coming out for a second." Another added, "THE SWITCH IN THE VOICE PLEASE HELP MEđđđ."
As the clip went viral on TikTok, Grande responded in the comments section to clarify the situation. She wrote, "habit (speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health :) đ”. I intentionally change my vocal placement (high/low) often depending on how much singing I’m doing đ. I’ve always done this BYE."
This is not the first time Grande’s voice has sparked discussions. At the 2024 Academy Awards, where she presented alongside her 'Wicked' co-star Cynthia Erivo, some fans noted her voice seemed higher-pitched than usual. Comparisons were made to Austin Butler's persistent Elvis voice post-film debut, with one X user writing, "Austin Butler Elvis voice but it's Ariana Grande Galinda voice."
Grande’s role in 'Wicked,' featuring several musical numbers, could explain the frequent shifts. The two-time Grammy winner will perform songs like "Popular" and the "Defying Gravity" duet with Erivo in the upcoming film adaptation. 'Wicked: Part One' is set to release on November 27, 2024, followed by 'Wicked: Part Two' on November 26, 2025.
