Magnitude 4.7 earthquake jolts Islamabad, K-P

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake measuring struck Islamabad and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with its epicentre located in southeastern Afghanistan.

The tremors were felt across various regions including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Swat, Malakand, North Waziristan, Parachinar, Lower Dir, Hangu, Charsadda, and Swabi.

There were no initial reports of damage or casualties.

The quake's depth was recorded at 98 km underground. According to the US Geological Survey, the seismic activity was also felt in neighboring countries such as Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

This event follows recent earthquake tremors experienced in different Pakistani cities.

On March 13, an earthquake of 5.3 magnitude jolted various regions of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, with no reports of any damages or casualties, Express News reported.

According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC), besides Islamabad, tremors were felt in Peshawar, Mardan, Malakand, Kohat, Swat, Buner, Shangla, Nowshera, and Sialkot.

The earthquake measured 5.3 on the Richter scale, while the depth of the earthquake's epicentre was 130 kilometres underground. The epicentre of the earthquake was in the Hindukush region of Afghanistan.

Another 4.9 magnitude earthquake earlier during the day had killed four people and injured others in Iran’s northeastern city of Kashmar, according to state media reports.

The quake struck at 1:24pm (9:54am GMT), Kashmar’s governor, Hajatollah Shariatmadari, who gave the casualty toll, said on state television.

Thirty-five people were hospitalised, he said, adding the quake damaged mostly dilapidated buildings in urban and rural areas of the city.
