The price of tomatoes has risen to more than Rs200 per kilogram in a single day ahead of Eidul Azha despite the fact that it has been set by the district government at Rs100 per kilogram.
This happens every year during Ramazan and Eidul Azha without inviting any attention from authorities despite the latter’s tall claims to the contrary.
The situation has forced the Peshawar Deputy Commissioner to impose a ban on transporting tomatoes out of the district via the imposition of Section 144.
Just two days before Eid, the price of tomatoes doubled in the local retail market in line with predictions that both tomatoes and onions would again be sold in black during this Eidul Azha. Local residents told The Express Tribune that prices had increased by Rs100 per kilogram in a single day and it now seems the district administration’s efforts would remain limited to verbal instructions yet again.
