'Shōgun' star Anna Sawai reflects on fan fascination with her J-Pop past

Anna Sawai opens up about unexpected love for her earlier music career and her journey on the hit FX series.

Anna Sawai, known for her role in the FX historical drama "Shōgun," recently spoke with ET about the renewed fan interest in her past endeavors beyond Hollywood. 

At a special Shōgun FYC Event in Los Angeles, Sawai discussed how fans have embraced her earlier work as a member of the J-pop girl group FAKY.

"It's strange, 'cause it's a career that I left," Sawai remarked about the unexpected appreciation for her time in the band. "But, I guess, thank you?"

Despite the newfound attention, Sawai doesn't foresee a reunion with her former bandmates. "I'm so happy doing what I'm doing right now," she said, reflecting on her decision to move on from her music career.

Sawai has garnered praise for her role in "Shōgun," where she portrays Toda Mariko, a translator in 1600s Japan. 

The series, based on James Clavell's novel, has been met with critical acclaim and a devoted fan following.

Reflecting on her experience, Sawai expressed admiration for actress Jodie Foster, whom she met during an Actress Roundtable hosted by The Hollywood Reporter. 

"I've just been kind of star struck this whole time," Sawai shared, expressing her desire to work with Foster in the future.

"Shōgun" has captivated audiences with its gripping storyline and stellar performances, and all 10 episodes are available to stream on Hulu.
