PARIS: Defending champions Spain and fellow European giants Italy secured their places at Euro 2012 with contrasting victories.

Spain eased to a thumping 6-0 win against Liechtenstein to make it six wins out of six while Italy left it late to gain a 1-0 win over Slovenia. Substitute Gianpaulo Pazzini scored the winner with five minutes remaining. Italy coach Cesar Prandelli put the victory down to courage.

“It was the victory of courage,” he said. “We dominated in midfield but couldn’t break through and that’s why I went for three forwards.”

Germany also qualified courtesy a 2-2 draw against Poland.

Meanwhile, Holland beat Finland 2-0 to need one point from their two remaining matches to qualify. England took a giant step towards the finals with a 1-0 win over Wales. France drew 0-0 against Romania.
