In a recent interview to the New York Times , Julia Louis-Dreyfus, known for her role on the hit sitcom "Seinfeld," expressed her support for "political correctness" in comedy, countering the views of her former co-star, Jerry Seinfeld. While Seinfeld criticised the impact of "PC culture" on comedy, Louis-Dreyfus argued that being mindful of sensitivities is beneficial, not detrimental, to the art form.

"I think to have an antenna about sensitivities is not a bad thing," Louis-Dreyfus told The New York Times. She emphasised that this doesn't mean comedy has to be devoid of humour or edge, but rather that being aware of potential offence can lead to more thoughtful and inclusive jokes.

Seinfeld, in a recent interview with The New Yorker, attributed the perceived decline of comedy to the "extreme left and PC c***," suggesting that fear of offending others has stifled creativity. However, Louis-Dreyfus disagreed, suggesting that the concentration of power and money in the hands of studios and streamers poses a greater threat to artistic expression.

Louis-Dreyfus clarified her stance on "political correctness," stating that when it equates to tolerance, it's "obviously fantastic." She believes that respecting different perspectives and avoiding unnecessary offence can enhance, rather than limit, comedic possibilities.

While acknowledging the right to free speech, Louis-Dreyfus emphasised the importance of being mindful of how words can impact others. This approach, she believes, can lead to more meaningful and inclusive comedy that resonates with a wider audience.

The differing viewpoints of these two comedy icons highlight the ongoing debate about the role of sensitivity and political correctness in the entertainment industry. While Seinfeld sees them as constraints, Louis-Dreyfus views them as opportunities for growth and progress.
