Michigan man behind viral court appearance lands back in jail over driving license

Judge says Michigan man in suspended license case never had a valid license.

The saga of Corey Harris, the Michigan man who gained notoriety for his peculiar court appearance, takes another twist as he finds himself back in jail following startling discoveries about his driver's license status.

Washtenaw County Judge J. Cedric Simpson dropped a bombshell during a court session, revealing that Corey Harris, 44, has never possessed a valid driver’s license, contrary to his claims. 

Simpson expressed frustration, stating, “Let me make it very clear, based on what the court looked at — [Harris] has never had a Michigan license. Ever."

Despite Harris's insistence that he had taken steps to reinstate his license, investigations revealed otherwise. 

Moreover, Harris's explanation for his lack of a license due to injuries from a traffic accident was debunked when it was revealed that he regularly renewed his state ID, knowing he did not possess a license.

Simpson reprimanded Harris for causing a "hoopla" after his viral court appearance, where he blamed his arrest on a clerical error. Further revelations emerged in court, including an outstanding bench warrant for driving with a suspended license dating back nine years.

Harris's defense attorney acknowledged his wrongdoing but emphasized his efforts to rectify the situation by paying reinstatement fees and seeking to obtain a learner’s permit.

The judge decided to hold Harris on the old warrant, reflecting the seriousness of his past negligence. 

If the warrant is not addressed promptly, Harris will be released on bond, with a court appearance scheduled for August.
