The highly anticipated second season of House of the Dragon is set to debut soon, and to celebrate, HBO hosted a grand premiere event in New York City. Cast and crew members attended, sharing insights with interviewers about what fans can expect from the upcoming season.
There are plenty of exciting moments to look forward to, as revealed at the June 5 premiere. Let's start with Emma D'Arcy, reprising her role as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen.
D'Arcy appeared as intense as ever in a sparkling suit as he spoke with Extra.
"She's stricken with grief, almost paralyzed with it, unable to act clearly," D'Arcy said. The final scene of season 1 showed Rhaenyra discovering that her son Luke had been killed by her nephew Aemond Targaryen, who backs his brother Aegon's claim to the Iron Throne over hers.
Meanwhile, Rhaenyra's former on-screen best friend, Alicent Hightower—portrayed by Olivia Cooke—continues to support her son Aegon's claim to the Iron Throne, despite his instability. Cooke appeared in blue and black attire and spoke with Extra.
"[S]he's f**king terrified," Cooke said about Alicent. "Her son has just brutally murdered Rhaenyra's son and she knows that she's on the cusp of civil war, and the Targaryen family and the kingdom is about to crack in two."
Then there's Rhaenyra's husband, Daemon Targaryen, portrayed by Matt Smith: once aspiring to claim the Iron Throne himself, Daemon will now support his wife in the upcoming wars.
However, it seems he's embarking on a strange and tumultuous journey in season 2. "He sort of tumbles down towards the abyss," Smith told Extra.
"A lot of the things you know about him become slightly unstuck. He unravels, essentially, it's like a piece of yarn tumbling away in the wind a bit. He sort of loses his mind a bit."
House of the Dragon Season 2 will be available for streaming on Sunday, June 16 at 9/8c on HBO and Max.
