Justice Akhtar takes oath as acting CJ

Apex court statement says Justice Akhtar to act as chief justice during period CJP Isa remains abroad

KARACHI:

Supreme Court's Justice Munib Akhtar took oath on Saturday as the acting chief justice of Pakistan as CJP Qazi Faez Isa is set to travel abroad, a statement released by the apex court said.

The statement added that Justice Munib Akhtar will act as the chief justice during the period CJP Isa remains abroad.

The oath was administered by Justice Yahya Afridi in a simple and dignified ceremony in the Supreme Court.

The ceremony was attended by SC judges, representatives of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), and Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA).

Last year, now retired Justice Sardar Tariq Masood took oath as the acting chief justice on December 16, 2023.

As per the statement released by the apex court, he was to perform the duties of the country's top judge during the absence of CJP Isa.

The oath was administered by Justice Ijazul Ahsan- who resigned earlier this year, in January.
