Netflix green lights ‘Happy Gilmore’ sequel 28 years after the original comedy came out

Streaming giant Netflix has confirmed the production of "Happy Gilmore 2," a sequel to the beloved 1996 golf comedy.

The news comes after months of speculation sparked by actor Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the original film.

According to reports, Netflix made the announcement during its upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday in New York.

Adam Sandler, who starred in and co-wrote the original film alongside director Dennis Dugan, is set to reprise his role as Happy Gilmore.

"Happy Gilmore" tells the story of a failing hockey player with anger issues who discovers a hidden talent for golf.

He joins the professional circuit to raise money and save his grandmother's house, facing off against the arrogant pro golfer Shooter McGavin.

McDonald first hinted at the sequel's existence in March, stating that Sandler had shown him a draft during an unexpected encounter.
